Nobody advertises a generic plan. It costs nothing to say and it is not a claim anybody checks. The test is not what they say. It is whether anything was drawn before you were asked to decide.That is the whole distinction, and it survives every sales conversation. A package is a price with a description attached. A design starts from the property. Both can be perfectly honest pieces of business. Only one of them answers to your building, and you should know which one you are buying.
What a design should include
A real design specifies the property, not the product. It names which rooflines, which gables, which trees, which walkways, instead of saying the front of the home. It says what the standard white is. It says where the controller mounts and how the wiring runs. And it accounts for what stays dark, which is a design decision and should be stated as one.
Order of operations
A price with nothing behind it is not comparable to anything. The cheaper number frequently covers a smaller scope, which only becomes clear at night after the install. When the design comes first, the comparison is honest. When the price comes first, the design gets shaped to fit the number, quietly.A plan you understand is also a plan you can hold somebody to, which is the practical reason to insist on one rather than accepting a number and a handshake.
Designing for the way you use the property
Expect questions, not just told things. How you use the outside of your home, where you actually go after dark, and what the main job is. Those answers shape the design as much as the building.

Roofline, path lighting, accents and security usually all appear on the list. Piecemeal buying gives you fixtures instead of a result. One plan, phased if it needs to be, holds together.
The design is a conversation
The first plan is a draft. If a run does not appeal to you, cut it. A company unwilling to revise is showing you the package. The answer should not be a hesitation.
The plan should end up in your hands
Ask for a copy, and hold onto it. It is useful years later for reasons you cannot predict now. A company that will not give you the drawing is telling you something about how they see the relationship.
